The brake system has a brake pedal (1) for actuating a master brake cylinder (2) having two serially arranged pistons (15,16), where a pressure fluid supply reservoir (4) is associated with the pressure chambers (17,18) under atmospheric pressure. A position detection device (25) detects the operating path of the brake pedal. A valve assembly (33) is designed for influencing the hydraulic simulator characteristics, where pedal characteristic defined by a simulator spring (29) is superimposed on a valve-controlled restoring force component.
