The method involves performing an insulation resistance test between a mass of a vehicle and an electric contact of a fuel cell stack (12) over a defined time window using a measurement device (18) at a connection of an ion exchanger (10) in a coolant circuit (16). The ion exchanger is switched over a valve (14) for deionization of a coolant to the coolant circuit. A final insulation resistance is determined after expiry of the time window. The determined insulation resistance is utilized as a characteristic value for assessment of operability of the ion exchanger. An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring an ion exchanger for a fuel cell system of a vehicle.
