The unit has first and second switching elements (2, 3) switched in a push-pull for a switching time with respect to a clock frequency. A controller adjusts the switching time or the clock frequency as a control variable, to provide a pre-given amplitude, frequency and phase angle of the phase current to a phase current output (6). The switching elements are provided with bidirectionally conductive semiconductor components (30, 31). The switching time is adjusted in dependence on sign of the phase current and a magnitude of the phase current.
