The sensor (10) has a light transmitter (12) for emitting transmission code sequence of modulated light beam (16) during transmission, and a light receiver (26) for generating a received signal from the objects in the monitored zone (20) or the reflected light (22). A correlation unit (38) produces correlation result by correlating the sampled received signal with a filter code sequence. An evaluation unit (32) determines the correlation peak of the correlation sequence and the object distance based on the reception time and the light propagation time. An independent claim is included for a method for detecting and determining distance of objects in monitoring region.
