The method involves adjusting a vehicle seat (1) against force of a return spring (7) by a servomotor (6). Test sizes (M) characteristic for engine load are detected during sequential seat adjustment and compared with threshold values. The seat adjustment is stopped or reversed if the test sizes exceed the threshold values. A quantitative- or a qualitative seat occupancy signal (L) i.e. switching signal of a seat occupancy mat (12), is detected. The threshold values are defined in a different manner based on the seat occupancy signal. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an anti-trap protection unit for a vehicle seat (2) a positioning device for displacement of a vehicle seat.
