The method involves projecting a pattern on an object (3), and capturing an image of the object with the projected pattern by a camera, where the pattern is a bar code or a two-dimensional dot code formed from multiple pixels. A coding is assigned to segments in an image plane (6) of the camera and in a farther plane. The coding is defined by a coherent amount from the pattern pixels. The segments assigned with coding in the image plane of the camera and in the farther plane are identified as mutually corresponding segments. An independent claim is also included for a device for contactless detecting of a three-dimensional contour.
