The invention relates to a method for configuring an automation device or simulator with an embedded high-level Petri network (HLPN) orchestration machine for controlling mechatronic components of an automation system, comprising the steps of: - Generating HLPN component models for each type of mechatronic components of the automation system, - Creation of a component instance model from an HLPN component model for each physically present mechatronic component, - Creation of a layout configuration file which describes the relationships between the component instance models to be connected, - Composition of the component instance models to at least one system model Basis of the layout configuration file, with logic ports of the component instance models being connected / linked to one another, generation of configuration files on the basis of the at least one system model and device description files WSDL files of the component instance models, the configuration files including at least one device configuration file and a service configuration file, loading the configuration files into the automation device containing the HLPN orchestration machine or the simulator, and executing the configuration files through the HLPN orchestration machine of the automation device or the simulator.
