The method of claim 1, wherein an element of the method related to automatically adjusting the setpoint at potential O to reduce emissions comprises stepping down the setpoint at potential O from a high setpoint to a low setpoint until the NO measurements become unstable and stepping up the setpoint at potential Ountil NO measurements become stable. 3. The method according to claim 2, in which the element of the method related to the stepwise reduction of the setpoint at the potential O includes a setpoint decrease at the potential O with a predetermined displacement rate. The method according to claim 2, in which the element of the method related to a stepwise increase in the setpoint at the potential O, includes increasing the setpoint at the potential O with one of the following parameters: the set displacement speed and the set value of the setpoint at the potential O. The method of claim 1, further comprising adjusting the setpoint at potential O in response to one of the changes in operating conditions and timer readings. The method of claim 5, wherein changing operating conditions comprises changing operating conditions selected from the group consisting of new engine load, new engine speed, new environmental conditions, catalyst degradation, and operating time interval.
