1. A centrifugal compressor (10), comprising: a rotor assembly (18) comprising at least one impeller (16); a bearing (20) connected to said rotor assembly (18) to rotatably hold it; a stator (18 ); a balancing drum (28) located between said at least one impeller (16) and said bearing (20); a balancing chamber (34) defined at least partially by the outer side of said balancing drum (28) and having connected to a balancing line (32); a sensor (42) for measuring the parameter which is associated with an axial load on said bearing (20); and a control valve (40) for changing the pressure in said balancing chamber (34) based on said measured parameter. 2. The centrifugal compressor of claim 1, further comprising: control logic configured to receive an output signal of said sensor and control said control valve in accordance with a predetermined function. The centrifugal compressor of claim 2, wherein said predetermined function is performed to increase the pressure in said balancing chamber when said axial load on said bearing exceeds a predetermined value. A centrifugal compressor according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein said bearing is an active magnetic bearing. A centrifugal compressor according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein said bearing is an oil lubricated bearing.
