1. A method for alleviating eye diseases in canids, comprising administering to a dog an alleviating eye disease amount of one or more carotenes. The method according to claim 1, wherein the carotenes are accumulated in the eye tissue. The method of claim 2, wherein the carotenes are accumulated in the cortical tissue of the eye, the nuclear tissue of the eye, or both. The method of claim 1, wherein the eye diseases are caused by radiation. The method according to claim 4, wherein the eye diseases are one or more of cataracts, radiation retinopathy, photokeratitis, photoconjunctivitis, pterygium, pingvecule and cancer. The method of claim 1, wherein the eye diseases are caused by free radicals. The method of claim 6, wherein the eye diseases are one or more of turbidity of the eyes, cataracts, and retinal degeneration. The method of claim 1, wherein the carotenes are α-carotene, β-carotene, γ-carotene, δ-carotene, ε-carotene, lycopene, and combinations thereof. The method of claim 1, wherein the carotenes are β-carotene, lycopene, and combinations thereof. The method of claim 1, wherein the carotene is β-carotene. The method according to claim 1, wherein the carotenes are given to canids in amounts of about 0.1 to 5000 mg. The method according to claim 1, wherein the carotenes are given to canids in amounts of about 0.1 to 500 mg per day. The method of claim 1, wherein the dogs are dogs. The method according to claim 1, wherein the carotenes are given to the canine on a long regular basis. The method of claim 1, wherein the carotenes are given to the canine on a daily basis. The method of claim 1, wherein the canids are mature canids. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing carotenes together with one or more ophthalmic agents in an amount effective to alleviate eye diseases. A way to maintain health
