The system of the present invention (900 ), the transmitter 700 and the receiver (800.a 800.b) , and the method provides a technique for coding the data bits to symbols using a TCM, MLCM or BIMLCM before being placed in the symbol block SCBT . Generally , TCM, MLCM, and BIMLCM does not have a good performance for a frequency selective channel . However , because the frequency domain equalization of SCBT to smooth the channel , the use of TCM, MLCM BIMLCM and can provide significant benefits . In addition, since some of the bits that remain not coded , this excessive rate requirements in the encoder and decoder can be relaxed. This feature is especially important with respect to the very high data rate systems .
