A polycrystalline diamond drill bit for percussion drilling uses very low torque and thrust that is formed of very specific insert and bit body dimensions to achieve maximum penetration rates and bit life when drilling very hard, high silica ground. The bits are made using a double chisel design, or a modified double chisel design, in the placement of the inserts on the face of the drill bit. The inserts are set into the body are very specific angles. The inserts have specific length to cut clearance for the bit body. The cutting angle and radius on the tip of the inserts are of very specific dimensions. The diameter of the inserts is of a specific diameter to retard the inserts from shearing off. The thrust and torque settings on the drill when using these PCD bits is less than 20 bar. When assembled in the manner as described this provides a system for use and application of PCD drill bits in hard rock drilling.
