PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new photoprotein.SOLUTION: There are provided the new photoprotein (luciferase) derived from a marine plankton, a gene cluster thereof, an ancestral photoprotein having photoprotein activity speculated therefrom, and a gene encoding the ancestral photoprotein. There are also described a full-length amino acid sequence and base sequence of the ancestral luciferase protein speculated from the amino acid sequence of the marine plankton which is an animal plankton belonging to the order of Calanoida, the superfamily of Augaptiloidea, the family of Metridinidae, the family of Lucicutiidae, and the family of Heterorhabdidae.
