To provide a method and apparatus for synthesizing various retransmitted hybrid automatic repeat request in stage (HARQ) messages in OFDM / OFDMA receiver. The combination of different types of HARQ combiners designed in the receiver, can be selected for each channel. With proper selection of the HARQ combining scheme, as compared to conventional HARQ combining techniques to reduce the required HARQ buffer size, it is possible to increase the combining gain. Furthermore, in order to reduce the bit error ratio (BER) without saturating the HAQR buffer, a forward and reverse shifting between different types of HARQ combining scheme, be dynamically selecting the HARQ combiner type it can.
