PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an austenitic stainless steel for a diesel engine EGR cooler excellent in intergranular corrosion resistance under a (sulfuric acid + nitric acid) environment at high temperature and high concentration, and to provide EGR cooler for a diesel engine using the steel as a constituent material.SOLUTION: The EGR cooler for a diesel engine is manufactured by using, as a constituent material, an austenitic stainless steel containing C:0.015 mass% or less, Si:0.01 to 0.20 mass%, Mn:0.01 to 2.0 mass%, P:0.020 mass% or less, S:0.010 mass% or less, Ni:10 to 30 mass%, Cr:16 to 30 mass%, N:0.20 mass% or less, Si and P satisfying formula (1);20×Si+100×P4.5 (1), where Si and P represent contents of each element (mass%), and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities.
