A multiprocessor data processing system has a number of cores 115 each with its own memory. Programs are divided in to tasks and the task images are stored in a task specific memory segments 550. The cores are connected to the task specific memories using core specific multiplexers and task specific multiplexers 510. When a task is allocated to a core, the core is connected to the corresponding memory segment and the memory image is copied into the core memory. A controller 140 continually re-evaluates the task allocation based on the number of cores a program is demanding and the task priority list. If a core is allocated to a different task, then the task memory image is copied to the task specific memory and the new task image is copied from its memory.
