The method involves cooling compressed air (33) from a compressor. The cooled air is sent to a purification unit (65). The purified air is separated by cryogenic distillation to form nitrogen/oxygen enriched fluid. Gaseous nitrogen flow (55) obtained from the distillation is heated by a flow of steam (61) before being used to regenerate an adsorbent bottle to form heated nitrogen and condensed steam (69). Part of the condensed steam under a pressure greater than 100 bars abs and at a temperature of about 100 degrees Celsius is sent to mix with air upstream of a compressor stage (31). An independent claim is also included for an air separation apparatus.
