The method involves providing a porous environment that contains carbon dioxide gas. A set of fluorescent markers is fixed at an end of an optical fiber, where a set of emission spectrums is determined based on a pH value of carbon dioxide gas for a given wavelength of the fluorescent markers. The optical fiber is introduced from a surface of an overlying storage tank or aquifer (AQ). A change in the pH value is determined within the overlying storage tank by detecting variations of the set of emission spectrums of the fluorescent markers. An independent claim is also included for a device for measuring variation of pH of an underground medium.
