The method involves assigning a line from a set of lines of network coding matrix to a relay node, where the relay node generates a specific coded symbol defined by the line. A line defining a coded symbol as a replacement signal is selected between another set of lines of the matrix by the node when the node does not generate the symbol defined by the line from the former set of lines. The replacement symbol accompanied with replacement information is generated and transmitted to a destination node, where the information indicates the line of matrix defining the replacement symbol. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for decoding coded symbols of code element defined in a form of linear combination of source symbols by a destination node (2) a computer program product comprising program code instructions to perform a method for transmitting coded symbols of a code element defined in a form of linear combination of source symbols (3) a computer-storable medium storing a computer program comprising a set of instructions executed by a computer to perform a method for transmitting coded symbols of a code element defined in a form of linear combination of source symbols (4) a relay node for transmitting coded symbols of a code element defined in a form of linear combination of source symbols (5) a destination code for decoding coded symbols of a code element defined in a form of linear combination of source symbols by a destination node.
