The side airbag has a gas bag (4), which is arranged at a vehicle seat (12) so that the gas bag is unfolded near the vehicle occupant for protecting the vehicle occupant on the vehicle seat, and a gas generator for filling the gas bag with gas so that gas bag unfolds. The gas bag and the gas generator are designed and arranged at the vehicle seat such that the gas bag is supported on a backrest frame of the vehicle seat in the unfolded state.
