The method involves setting a sub-stoichiometric operation constant for the internal combustion engine for a predetermined period of time. A constant air ratio is set in the middle load region (B) of the engine. An electric machine drive is used as a switchable auxiliary drive to satisfy a requested increased power demand, so that the steady-state operation of the engine is maintained. An independent claim is included for internal combustion engine.
