The method involves extending a lanes web (22) in the mass flow (10) at a separation point or a dividing area (18), which separates the single lanes (20) from one another. A sliding element (26) is arranged upstream to the lanes web upstream of the mass flow for influencing the mass flow from one side or for lateral displacement of one article or container (12) before the contact of the lanes web. The sliding element is spring-assisted and is operated automatically or in response to the gaps arising in the container flow. An independent claim is included for a device for dividing a disordered mass flow of articles or containers, particularly cylindrical containers or bottles.
