Eddy current brake e.g. retarder for use in e.g. lorry, has permanent magnets arranged on carrier such that orientation and direction of magnetic field lines from south pole to north pole of magnet is aligned parallel to rotational axis
The brake has electrically conductive metal body (21) i.e. stator, extending vertically to a rotational axis (A). Eddy currents are generated in the body by magnetic fields. Permanent magnets (11, 12) are firmly and immovably arranged on a carrier (10) i.e. rotor, in a circumferential direction around the axis such that exit of magnetic field lines from the magnets toward the body is carried-out in a rotational axis direction. An orientation and direction of the lines from a magnetic south pole (S) to a magnetic north pole (N) of the respective magnet are aligned parallel to the axis. The magnets are designed as samarium-cobalt magnets and neodymium magnets.
