The method involves adjusting the number of molecules by the micro-positioning of receipt of sniffing capillary in the efflux of working position of reference gas supply, so that the ion current measured by the isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IMRS) corresponds to the previously measured ion current supplied to the reference gas. The sample gas and the reference gas are sequentially supplied to the IRMS. An independent claim is included for a micro-positioning system.
