The machine (110) has a circular cylinder assembly comprising pistons that are guided in cylinders to drive a shaft (118). Each cylinder has an expansion volume with inlet and outlet openings for a working medium. A cavity (126) is formed around the shaft in a central region of the cylinder assembly, and limited with an off-axial aperture by a circulating rotary valve. The outlet openings are guided through a cylinder head (120) corresponding to the cylinders such that a temporary connection is produced between the cavity and the expansion volume over the off-axis aperture in the rotary valve.
