The images of workpiece (12) are detected by optical sensor (14) during change of distance (32) between workpiece and optical sensor from start distance (34) to final distance (36) at high speed and during change of distance to start distance at low speed. The start and final focus values and image distance are associated to each respective image. The start and final focus values are evaluated to determine whether start focus value exceeds extreme value and to determine distance at which final focus value exceeds extreme value. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) coordinate measuring machine; and (2) computer program product for detecting focused image distance of optical sensor of coordinate measuring machine.
