The invention relates to a method for determining a safe and economical current density-dependent voltage operating range and / or specific energy consumption operating range of a cell element (2) of an electrolyzer (1). In order to provide a method which leads to improved voltage results and / or specific energy consumption results, the invention proposes that the determination of the voltage operating range and / or specific energy consumption operating range is effected as a function of an operating parameter assigned to the cell element (2).
