The method involves determining a power supply voltage of lifting magnets (223) of a lifting piston pump (22), and determining a coil current of a magnetic coil. Electrical resistance of the magnetic coil is calculated, and temperature rise of the magnetic coil is determined with respect to a reference temperature of the electrical resistance of the magnetic coil and electrical resistance of the magnetic coil at the reference temperature. The lifting magnets are controlled by a pulse width modulation. The voltage of the lifting magnets is adjusted by a lifting cylinder (222). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising a set of instructions for executing a method for determining temperature of a magnetic coil of a lifting piston pump (2) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions for executing a method for determining temperature of a magnetic coil of a lifting piston pump.
