The device (10) has guide units which are adapted to lead the user to relevant information of the complex system and/or of the components, that are necessary for identifying the component. The input units are adapted to enter the information of the complex system and/or the component in the device. An interface (22) is adapted to connect the device with a database (23) to obtain data of the identified component, and identification unit (24) is provided to identify the component on the basis of information and data in the database. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) method for identifying component of complex system; and (2) computer program for identifying component of complex system.
