The method involves implementing measurements with frequency modulation ramps with different frequency shifts. A transmitted signal is mixed with a received signal, and a peak value of a spectrum of the mixed signal is determined in each of the measurements. An expansion indicator value is determined as a function of deviations of the peak values of measurements from a mean value of the peak values of measurements. A discrete spectrum of the mixed signal is determined in the measurement. An independent claim is also included for a radar system.
