PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide monocotyledonous cells that have been modified to produce human IGF-I and/or human IGFBP-3.SOLUTION: The monocotyledonous cells have been modified to include a DNA construct for expression of nucleotide sequences encoding an insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) or nucleotide sequences encoding an insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), the DNA construct including nucleotide sequences encoding these proteins operably linked to control sequences for their expression in the monocotyledonous cells. In one aspect, the IGF-I and IGFBP-3 are human proteins. In another aspect, the control sequences include promoters operable in seeds of monocotyledonous plants and stop sequences operable in seeds of monocotyledonous plants.
