PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low cost nitrification apparatus which can supply oxygen necessary for nitrification reactions without forcibly sending air from the outside. PSOLUTION: The nitrification apparatus 1 includes a horizontal and thin type SSB reactor 3 which performs the nitrification treatment of nitrogen-containing wastewater using nitrifying bacteria, which are aerobic bacteria, and has a sponge carrier 9 for immobilizing the nitrifying bacteria therein, and a siphon 5 which, when the SSB reactor 3 is filled with the wastewater, discharges the wastewater in the SSB reactor 3 in a short time to expose the sponge carrier 9 to the atmosphere. The filling and discharge of the wastewater are alternately repeated to perform the nitrification treatment, whereby oxygen necessary for nitrification reactions can be sufficiently secured without forcibly sending air by a blower or the like.
