This application concerns a receiver for receiving chirp signals according to a protocol in which each chirp signal has a gradient known to the receiver device. The receiver selects a reference chirp to have a gradient, gâ , which differs from the known gradient, g, of a received chirp signal by a predetermined fixed value, v. In one embodiment v=1. The received chirp signal is multiplied by the reference chirp signal to produce a mixed chirp signal. The received chirp signal is detected by correlating the mixed chirp signal with a fixed gradient correlating chirp signal having a gradient v.
