A method of poaching an egg, in which a vessel 1 is provided that includes a cup-shaped upper portion 2 that is open at the top and a foot portion 3, the vessel being made in one piece from a plastics material. The vessel 1 is placed in a saucepan 5 with an egg to be poached received in the upper portion of the vessel and water 6 around the vessel and a lid 7 is placed on the saucepan. The saucepan 5 is heated with the foot portion 3 of the vessel 1 resting on the base of the saucepan and with water and steam around the vessel and the egg is poached in the vessel 1. Finally the vessel 1 is removed from the saucepan 5 and the egg is removed from the vessel 1. Preferably the depth of the water in the saucepan is between 1cm and 3cm and preferably the foot portion supports the cup-shaped portion above the base of the saucepan.
