A system and method for safeguarding digital objects consisting of digital assets, such a movie or film (digital object) consisting of various sub files including audio, image, text, video and multimedia files (digital assets). The system includes a unique identifier, such as a watermark or fingerprint, and an impairer, such as encryption, colour offset, analogue distortion, a mask, pixilation, jitter, scrambling or the like, in each digital asset. A database is provided with a record of each unique identifier. Upon receipt or use of a digital asset, the unique identifier (e.g. a watermark) is checked against the database, if the identifier is valid then the digital asset can be enabled, e.g. by decryption. The asset may be re-watermarked, i.e. given an altered unique identifier, for instance after the asset is changed or edited by a user and the database may be consequentially updated. There may be a requirement to authenticate data assets within a pre-set time window, integraty of data may be checked with a checksum computation and metadata may be associated with the unique identifier to relate the asset to relational data stored elsewhere.
