A coating is applied to a plastic, resin, wood or composite part which forms an instrument (e.g. pen or stylus) for the purpose of writing, drawing or pointing by hand - when using a capacitive sensitive or similar touch screen. The tip and active shaft of the writing instrument is coated by vacuum metalising, plasma or other current methods of applying a thin film metallic coating to either a plastic, resin, wood or composite part. The part may be lacquered to protect the coating on the shaft and writing point. The nib/tip may be finished directly with a Polytetrafluoroethylene lacquer (or fluoropolymer film) suspension that can remain clear or have pigmentation. If a pigmentation is added to the Polytetrafluoroethylene lacquer it would provide a visual indicator to the end user, that the protective coating is failing and that its time to replace the instrument.
