Chemical transformation of a substrate comprising wood, comprises two impregnation steps comprising: contacting the substrate comprising wood with a first liquid based treatment solution (at least 50 wt.%, preferably at least 80 wt.%) comprising a mixture containing 5-60 wt.% of glycerol and 40-95 wt.% of water; and contacting the substrate comprising wood with a second liquid based treatment solution (at least 50 wt.%, preferably at least 80 wt.%) comprising a mixture containing 5-90 wt.% of one or more dicarboxylic acids (I) and 10-95 wt.% of water.
