The tool has an upper telescopic tube (1) and a lower telescopic tube (2) hooked directly or indirectly on upper and lower ends of a rear damper to be compressed (A). A part of a compression arm (6A) between a pivot connection (7) and a compression handle (11) is longer than a part of another compression arm (6B) between the pivot connection and a lift rod (10) so that tilting of the compression handle ensures sliding of one of the tubes with the other tube in less effort to reduce the length of the tubes for compressing the damper. An independent claim is also included for a method for compressing a rear damper of a motor vehicle.
