The method involves applying short signal pulses e.g. current pulses, with predetermined repetition rate in a contact of actuating units (1-3) for determining an open or closed switch position of the actuating units. The open or closed switch position is detected depending on a voltage level at the contact of the actuating units, and pulse duration of the signal pulses is extended as corrosion current at a time period of the repetition rate, where the signal pulses indicate a closed switching position. The switching position is detected according to the signal pulses. The signal pulses are selected from current pulse, voltage pulse or triangular signal pulse. An independent claim is also included for a device for energizing an actuating unit of an operating element for an on-board electronics of a vehicle with anti-corrosion current.
