The method involves providing predetermined parameters of a line (L) for a connection purpose, and computing (S3) a minimum and/or consumption-optimized line cross section (LQ) under consideration of the predetermined parameters. A conduction type (LT) is additionally determined. The parameter is selected from a group consisting of maximum temperature environment (Tmax) of the line and/or maximum permanent current (Imax) and/or maximum voltage drops (DeltaU) and/one line length (LI) and/or the conduction type. An interconnect component is automatically selected. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program for executing steps involved in a method for automatically calculating a line cross section and a line in a motor vehicle electrical system (2) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for automatically calculating a line cross section and a line in a motor vehicle electrical system.
