The device comprises an imaging sensor (3) for detecting a road surface, and an evaluation unit (4) for evaluation of an image data (B) captured by the imaging sensor and for determining the road condition (Z) from the image data. The imaging sensor comprises a transmitter unit (3.1) for transmitting the electromagnetic radiation in the terahertz range on the road surface and a receiving unit (3.2) for receiving the electromagnetic radiation reflected from the road surface. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining a road condition of a roadway located in front of a vehicle.
