The method involves detecting an actual distance between a vehicle axle and a vehicle body by a detection medium (2), where a signal representing the actual distance is generated. An evaluation and control device (3) repeatedly evaluates a trigger criterion in a trigger loop. A distance tolerance is reduced from one distance tolerance level to another distance tolerance level when the triggering criterion is fulfilled. The trigger criterion is satisfied when a road condition value is smaller than a predetermined threshold. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for adjusting the height of a vehicle.
