The method involves dividing a combustion process within combustion chamber during duty cycle of a cylinder in two combustion starting phases and a main conversion phase. The main conversion phase is formed as a homogeneous charge combustion ignition, which is initiated in the chamber with adequate pressure and temperature. The starting phase is formed by the combustion process that differs from the combustion ignition to influence the pressure and/or temperature in the chamber such that combustion ignition is selectively initiated with respect to a desired crankshaft angle.
