The device has an electrical or electronic switching element adjusting phase current (i-U, i-V, i-W). A driver (3) controls a state of the electrical or electronic switching element. An evaluating device (10) e.g. field programmable gate array, determines an amount and gradient of current, and is connected with the driver for current measurement. The evaluating device evaluates a safety criterion based on the amount and/or gradient of the phase current, and controls the driver with a switching off signal or a time course of the switching off signal if the safety criterion is met. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling phase current of an electric machine.
