The method involves determining two acceleration data of an acceleration sensor (12a,12b) and converting the two determined acceleration data into two acceleration data. The conversion takes place such that the directions of the accelerations represented by the converted acceleration data enclose a predetermined angle together with the longitudinal axis of the vehicle (10a,10b). An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling personal protection- and backing units for a vehicle.
