The driver assistance system has transverse control arm supported at a non-rail bound motor vehicle, which detects a lane lying before the vehicle and generates steering moments in a steering system of the vehicle. The system detects an angle between the vehicle longitudinal axis or a trajectory of the vehicle and a roadway-route line corresponding to a route of a lane lying ahead. If the vehicle longitudinal axis or trajectory of the vehicle deviates at more than a threshold value from the route line of the lane, a steering moment is prepared minimizing the angle.
