The method involves operating an internal combustion engine in an idling mode of operation and moving in a further power saving mode. The time span, for which the internal combustion engine is operated in the idling mode of operation before switching in the further power saving mode, is determined based on an evaluation of the operation history of the working machine. An independent claim is also included for a working machine with a controller.
