The method for cooling a reformer (R) of a steam reformation plant, in which the reformer is guided as tube furnace and heatable over a burner, comprises vaporizing water extracted in a boiler steam drum (D1) in a waste heat boiler (E2) arranged in a flue gas system (S) of the reformer, and conducting the water vapor as coolant through the reformer pipes arranged in a combustion chamber (F) of the reformer. Cooling air is supplied with the effect of the natural gas by a combustion air system of the burner and introduced through the off-state burner into the combustion chamber. The method for cooling a reformer (R) of a steam reformation plant, in which the reformer is guided as tube furnace and heatable over a burner, comprises vaporizing water extracted in a boiler steam drum (D1) in a waste heat boiler (E2) arranged in a flue gas system (S) of the reformer, and conducting the water vapor as coolant through the reformer pipes arranged in a combustion chamber (F) of the reformer. Cooling air is supplied with the effect of the natural gas by a combustion air system of the burner, introduced into the combustion chamber through the off-state burner and discharged through the flue gas system. The quantity of the cooling air (0-10 %) is controlled by a throttling device arranged in the combustion air system and is larger than the minimum amount required for the sufficient cooling of the reformer pipes. The position of the throttling device is adjusted with respect to the water level in the vapor drum. The reformer comprises a thermal insulation formed from ceramic fiber material and/or refractory bricks. An independent claim is included for a steam reformation plant.
