The method involves applying a frequency analysis method to data fields of color channels and a visual (VIS) image of a scene recorded by a thermal image camera (1) to generate transformed data fields with data field entries, respectively. A combined data field with selected low- and high frequency transformed data field entries of the respective transformed data fields. An inverse frequency analysis method is applied to the combined data field and results of the inverse frequency analysis method are provided as the channels of a processed infrared (IR) image. An independent claim is also included for a thermal image camera comprising a detector unit.
