The method involves controlling and/or regulating a parameter of a combustion engine (10) and/or an exhaust system (14). Time function of a manipulated variable is obtained depending on an integrator-pitch, where the time function characterizes point regulation (29). A parameter determining the integrator-pitch is determined under application of dead time period depending on the engine and system, where the period is determined based on temperature of exhaust gas. A parameter of the engine and/or system is controlled and/or regulated based in a signal of an exhaust gas probe (28). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program has a set of instructions for performing a method for operating a combustion engine (2) a storage medium stores a computer program has a set of instructions for performing a method for operating a combustion engine (3) a controlling and/or regulating device.
